Michelin brothers

(André Michelin; Edouard Michelin)
André Michelin (1853-1931), born in Paris, and his brother Edouard Michelin (1859-1948), born in Clermont-Ferrand, were concerned with matters of travel and transport. In 1891, Edouard conceived the idea for an inflatable removable bicycle tire, and both soon became interested in carriages. They produced the first rubber tire for cabs (1894). In 1895, they patented the first inflatable tire for automobiles. The soon-to-be well-known Guide Michelin was created by André in 1900, followed by a series of maps dealing with France and other countries. André worked, too, on the problem of numbering and marking roads (1911). The Michelin Company, the second-largest tire producer in the world, is located in Clermont-Ferrand.
